A road over bridge (ROB) carries a road across a railway line and replaces a level crossing. ROB design combines the geometric design of the road and its approaches with the structural design of the bridge, and must meet the railway authority's clearance and approval requirements. Vishvaratna Infrasolutions prepares the general arrangement drawing, structural design and drawings.
ROB structures are designed to the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) codes for road bridges, for example IRC:6 and IRC:112, together with the requirements of the railway authority for clearances and drawings. The client's contract sets the governing standards.
| ROB (road over bridge) | RUB (road under bridge) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the road goes | Passes over the railway line | Passes under the railway line |
| Typical use | Replaces a level crossing with a bridge over the track | Replaces a level crossing with a subway beneath the track |
A road over bridge (ROB) is a bridge that carries a road over a railway line, removing the level crossing so that road and rail traffic no longer conflict.
In an ROB the road passes over the railway line. In a road under bridge (RUB) the road passes under the railway, which is carried on a bridge or box structure above the road.
The general arrangement drawing generally needs approval from the railway authority for the portion that affects the railway and its clearances. Other approvals depend on the project owner and the contract.
